Resistive or capacitive touch screen monitor or panel PC? Which is more suitable for work glove users?

Are you forced to wear gloves at work and every time you have to interact with your panel, the touch does not work properly?

Often, when choosing an operating panel (monitor or panel PC), people do not pay attention to the type of touchscreen to be used.

Resistive touchscreen, capacitive, infrared...

The types of touch are different and it is important to understand which technology should be used in one context and which in another.

Otherwise, you risk wasting money on unsuitable products.

So, resistive or capacitive touchscreen?

Before we get to the heart of the matter, we must make a due preamble.

Panel PCs are frequently divided into two types:

  • Panel PCs with capacitive touchscreen
  • Panel PCs with resistive touchscreen.

We don't want to talk about what the difference between the two types is (we have already written a specific article about this): here we want to emphasise that if you work in industry or in a heavy-duty environment where you have to wear gloves all the time, you need a touch instrument that receives your commands - even if you are wearing work gloves.

And of the two types mentioned, the most suitable is the resistive Panel PC.

Resistive panel PC: why it is best if you work with gloves on

There are work environments (such as those above) where the operator is obliged - by law - to wear gloves at all times and can never take them off.

In these environments you understand that if you choose to use a Panel PC with a touch screen that does not interact with the touch of the fingers covered by the glove and does not receive your commands, you cannot do your job.

There are, in fact, screens that work by finger pressure, others that detect position by electrical potential.

In fact.

Whereas the capacitive touch screen detects position thanks to the difference in electrical potential between the user's hand - or the stylus used - and the different points touched, the resistive panel PC is characterised by electrical resistance: thus, when the finger exerts pressure, an electronic circuit is opened that detects the point touched and diversifies it from the others.

Consequently, although the resistive touch screen represents an older technology than the capacitive one and is more in disuse, it is undeniable that, between the two, it is the most suitable model for those who work in an industrial sector and must always wear gloves.

Put simply: if you work in an industrial environment where you cannot take off your gloves, you cannot use a capacitive touch screen Panel PC but have to rely on a resistive Panel PC.

Why you should rely on KM Soltec when purchasing a Panel PC
